Neural control of locomotion; Part 1: The central pattern generator from cats to humans
نویسنده
چکیده
In the last years it has become possible to regain some locomotor activity in patients suffering from an incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI) through intense training on a treadmill. The ideas behind this approach owe much to insights derived from animal studies. Many studies showed that cats with complete spinal cord transection can recover locomotor function. These observations were at the basis of the concept of the central pattern generator (CPG) located at spinal level. The evidence for such a spinal CPG in cats and primates (including man) is reviewed in part 1, with special emphasis on some very recent developments which support the view that there is a human spinal CPG for locomotion. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. Neural control of locomotion: sensory control of the central pattern generator and its relation to treadmill training.
Many studies have shown that a special treadmill training is effective in restoring locomotor function in cats with a complete spinal lesion. In the last few years it has become possible to regain some locomotor activity in patients suffering from a spinal cord injury through an intense training on a treadmill, as in cats. The ideas behind this approach owe much to insights derived from studies...
متن کاملUsing the Adaptive Frequency Nonlinear Oscillator for Earning an Energy Efficient Motion Pattern in a Leg- Like Stretchable Pendulum by Exploiting the Resonant Mode
In this paper we investigate a biological framework to generate and adapt a motion pattern so that can be energy efficient. In fact, the motion pattern in legged animals and human emerges among interaction between a central pattern generator neural network called CPG and the musculoskeletal system. Here, we model this neuro - musculoskeletal system by means of a leg - like mechanical system cal...
متن کاملGait Generation for a Bipedal System By Morris-Lecar Central Pattern Generator
The ability to move in complex environments is one of the most important features of humans and animals. In this work, we exploit a bio-inspired method to generate different gaits in a bipedal locomotion system. We use the 4-cell CPG model developed by Pinto [21]. This model has been established on symmetric coupling between the cells which are responsible for generating oscillatory signals. Th...
متن کاملNeural Control for Locomotion of Walking Machines
The basic locomotion and rhythm of stepping in walking animals like cockroaches mostly relies on a central pattern generator (CPG) [1], while their peripheral sensors are used to control walking behaviors [2]. By contrast, in stick insects, sensory feedback serving as reflexive mechanism plays a critical role in shaping the motor pattern for adaptivity and robustness of walking gaits [2]. Inspi...
متن کامل1 Control of Locomotor Cycle Durations
In intact animals and humans, increases in locomotor speed are usually associated with decreases in step cycle duration. Most data indicate that the locomotor central pattern generator (CPG) shortens cycle duration mainly by shortening the durations of extensor rather than flexor phases of the step cycle. Here we report that in fictive locomotion elicited by electrical stimulation of the midbra...
